Zansker valley lies to the south-west of leh surrounded by the Himalayan and Zansker range. Most isolated of all the Trans-Himalayan Valley. Popularly known as Zansker Chos-yul (The Land of wisdom). It takes two days and a night to reach from leh via Kargil. Zansker comprise two main valley of Stod(Doda chu) and Lungnak (Tsarab chu) which converge below at padum. The valley has an area of 5000 square km an elevation of 13,154 ft. The area remains inaccessible for 7 month from the rest of world in a year. All the high passes get closed in the winter. Only way to reach Zansker during winter is either by helicopter or through Zansker River. Popularly known as Frozen river track. Plenty of tourists come to experience the chader track during winter. The geographical isolation of Zansker has resulted in the preservation of the Buddhist heritage and identity. The settlement of a small muslim community in the center of zansker padum can be seen. Many ancient monastic establishments are still actively involved in religious activities. Some remote caves here are believed to have been used by the succession of Buddhist saints to sustain meditation pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.
